Three Pioneering Business Leaders Share How They Leveled Up In The Face Of Adversity | Two Inclusive Marketing Lessons From Hasbro’s Potato Head Rebrand | The Dearth Of Black CEOs

Last week, Hasbro announced changes to its iconic Mr. Potato Head, dropping the “Mr.” as a step toward “making sure all feel welcome” by promoting gender equality and inclusion.  On the surface, the news about Hasbro’s Potato Head is a fun, feel-good story—but the decision is reflective of the growing trend toward inclusive branding and how far we have to go in creating DEI in the corporate and commercial worlds.

Case in point: Even as corporate leaders resolve to
create workforces that better reflect America’s diversity, they struggle to achieve the same diversity at the top.

Last month,
C-suite diversity took a hit when Kenneth Frazier announced he would be retiring as CEO of Merck. Upon Frazier’s retirement in June, just three Black chief executives will lead S&P 500 companies. Here’s why that dearth of Black leadership speaks volumes about the reluctance of white men and women in positions of power to create the opportunities for Black men and women to compete and thrive in business.

As we work towards building a business ecosystem where Black Americans can thrive, our best hope may come from listening to the individuals who have overcome adversity in business.

At For(bes) The Culture’s Culturally Accountable Summit last month, three influential voices shared a common belief: that highlighting their diverse perspectives and authentic identities was integral to their business success.
Here, we share insights and advice from those leaders—Shavone Charles of VSCO; Taylor Culliver of Brother Box; and Noor Tagouri of At Your Service—including how they leveled up and found success in the business world.
