Women Take Charge In Tech | Can Albert Bourland Make Pfizer's Case To Investors? | H-1Bs Get A Major Reprieve

With our C-suite communities—our CEO Network, our CMO Network, our CIO Network and our CFO Network—we put the individuals, the people behind the titles, into focus. As we go deep with these individual groups of our audience, we spotlight the people driving the headlines, what makes them tick, how they’re making decisions and where they see opportunity for growth. This week’s CxO content roundup is no exception—we feature stories about and conversations with C-suite leaders like the three women recently named to CIO roles at some of the world’s (and nation’s!) biggest organizations, Kathryn Guarini, Laura Miller and Clare Martorana, as well as with Burger King’s marketing chief Fernando Machado and Angi Homeservices’ CEO Oisin Hanrahan and CRO Umang Dua.

An additional way we spotlight individual executives—and their important collaboration in the C-suite—is via our recently launched Forbes CxO Nexus video-interview series. Don’t miss just-published interviews with Ally’s CMO Andrea Brimmer and CHRO Kathie Patterson, and the Gannett duo of CMO Mayur Gupta and CPO Kris Barton, who discuss the importance of aligning incentives within organizations. You can watch all CxO Nexus interviews

Have a great week.

Comings & Goings

March is shaping up to be a banner month for women in tech. In the past two weeks, three women have been appointed to CIO roles. Kathryn Guarini will helm technology at IBM, Laura Miller will step into the information chief role at Macy’s and Clare Martorana will lead the office of electronic government at the Office of Management and Budget for the U.S. government.

When Oisin Hanrahan and Umang Dua sold their startup,
Handybook, to Angi Homeservices in 2018, they didn’t think they’d be leading the company in just a few years. Now, Hanrahan is Angi’s CEO, and Dua its CRO. Here’s how they went from startup founders to the leaders of the publicly traded company that acquired them.

Leadership & Strategy

Burger King’s International Women’s Day tweet—”Women belong in the kitchen”—aimed for cheekiness (follow-up tweets went on to indict gender inequity in restaurant kitchens), but fell flat. In an interview with Forbes CMO Editor Marty Swant, CMO Fernando Machado opens up about why it all went wrong.

Just about every company stumbled in moving to remote work a year ago. What was once a chaotic challenge has now become something of a cottage industry. If you or your business are having difficulty
working or managing from afar, this new wave of remote work HR startups can whip your organization into shape.

The Biden administration’s Department of Labor has halted a policy from the Trump administration that would’ve required businesses to
pay significantly more to employ H-1B visa holders. The move would pose an existential threat to foreign workers and the businesses that employ them; for now, they can breathe easy.

Albert Bourland may have successfully led Pfizer through the coronavirus pandemic, but he hasn’t been able to convince investors that his pharmaceutical giant is worth anything more for it.
