RWD Weekly #451 — the one about Ghosts 😱

Read online

Hello again, welcome back to RWD Weekly #451.

Our feature website this week is hosted across a network of solar powered servers and is sent to you from wherever there is the most sunshine. We're seeing more and more types of these websites and I'm going to compile a list of interesting environmentally friendly sites/services.

If you've built something, or have seen a site that has an eco friendly approach, or are using a hosting company/service that is pro environment please send them through and I'll share the list.

Let's get linking.

Ghost 4.0

It has been great watching Ghost grow over the past 8 years. After being involved as an early backer and providing the first hosting service for Ghost (we actually beat them to deliver it) I've been constantly amazed at howe they continue to innovate while still keeping blogging at the heart of the product. Kudos to Jon and the rest of the team and contributors.

Practical accessibility, part 1: Markup semantics & ARIA

Every time I work on a new client project there is an issue that I've never encountered before. Doesn't matter how similar the site might be from the last one (even if it's a templated site), there's still something new to deal with. In this article, Maggie Wachs goes through a list that when followed ensures a solidly accessible and usable experience, shared in this and future “Practical accessibility” posts.

Building Dark Mode

Dark mode isn't as simple as putting a switch on your site and reversing all the colours (if only). I enjoy Robin's articles from CSS Tricks and he's smashed out another great one for his day job Sentry.io about just that.

CSS Generators

In a new short series of posts, Iris is hightlighting some of the useful tools and techniques for developers and designers. This time it’s all about CSS Generators: from CSS shadows to easing gradients to CSS overlays to CSS doodles.

Polypane 5

Polypane 5 is out with new ways to see your console messages, new performance settings and a new focus order overview. It has a new Chromium version (89), many performance improvements, updated UI elements and new debug tools.

Tutorials

Debugging layout shifts

Now that layout shifts (CLS) are being used as a ranking signal for sites on Google results it is important you can identify the issues and know how to debug them. Fortunately, Katie Hempenius has written this ace introduction on how you can do just that.

How to Improve CSS Performance

If you're getting started and are not aware that CSS can also be bad for performance along with large images or badly written JS, this is the article for you. Milica takes you through the best practices to ensure that your site is as speedy as it can be (with regards to your CSS at least).

Just-In-Time: The Next Generation of Tailwind CSS

@tailwindcss/jit is a new experimental library that compiles all of your CSS on-demand as you author your template files, instead of generating your entire stylesheet up front. This means that you get the same small file sizes you're used to in production but on your development environment as well.

Now THAT’S What I Call Service Worker!

I'm sure most of you by now are aware of service workers. But, have you heard about a streaming service worker? This detailed tutorial from Jeremy Wagner takes you through the journey.

Fetching Data from API for Dummies (JavaScript)
