Who’s telling your story? – this week on Inside Intercom

With such an influx of information available these days, it can be hard to tell fact from fiction. And since most of us are too busy to verify every single piece of information we cross paths with on a daily basis, it’s no surprise that damaging misconceptions and assumptions can be formed and reinforced over time.

That’s something that Janeen Uzzell, COO of the Wikimedia Foundation, knows all too well. In our recent podcast, she walked us through her mission for the Wikimedia Foundation and her fight towards knowledge equity. “We recognize the responsibility that we have, being such a powerful force for free knowledge to the world,” she says.

But even the largest repository of information isn’t without its blind spots. Janeen is focused on encouraging otherwise unheard voices to speak up and write their stories in an effort to bridge the gap in information caused by systemic gender and race bias and to create an accurate reflection of the world’s diversity.

Highlighting the important role that diversity plays in challenging assumptions and fuelling innovation, she says, “A diversity of teams will create a diversity of thought, which will create a diversity of experience. The more sources you have generating information, the better.”
