Hey Reader,

How many of us believe that if we just show up at work and do a good job, we'll be rewarded?

Look at the following set of beliefs and invisible scripts about careers. Are any of these true for you?

• You told yourself that if you worked hard, your boss would recognize you and give you a raise, but it didn't happen.
  
  
• You didn't negotiate when you got the job. You thought about it at performance reviews, but it hasn't worked out the way you imagined.
  
  
• You know you should be paid more, but you can't figure out exactly how. Can it happen at this job … a different job … what job? 

What do you think the actual truth is about how people get promotions and large raises? (Hint: "Only backstabbers and asskissers get ahead" is not the right answer.) Respond to this email and let me know.
