editor's note

Morning ,

This week I'm sharing the above tweet with you because I have not stopped thinking about it since I first read it a few weeks ago. It seems like such a clear courtesy we could be extending to each other, but... do we? 🤯

I have two questions for you this week: What are you doing to separate your free time from availability right now? And how are you extending the same boundaries to everyone else around you? I'm at the very beginning of understanding what "making plans" could even look like this spring and summer, and only one thing is really clear: I'll be taking these ten words with me wherever I go.

Until Next Friday,
Tyler Calder, Director of Content at GNI

weekly picks

ideas for unwinding this weekend
add it to your TBTR
  1. Celebrate Earth Week by... finding a more sustainable alternative to ONE thing you use every day (like these sponge cloths instead of paper towels) and then.... not buying anything at all if you don't need it! 🌍

  2. Commit to a TBTR... "For the past few weeks, I've been doing TBTRs — throwback Thursday rituals. Each Thursday, I engage in a joy-sparking activity that evokes childhood. For example: watching a childhood classic (A Goofy Movie and Naruto have been recent examples), pinning aesthetic cartoon stills to a nostalgia board on Pinterest (see above), and listening to oldies on my coming-of-age playlist." - Zeniya, Content Team 📺  Overheard from HQ
  3. In case no one's told you today... Jenny Lawson wants you to know you're not alone. Her new book Broken (in the best possible way) humanizes the experience of living with anxiety and depression — and provides some belly laughs along the way. Get your copy here. 📚 Sponsor

  4. A few great things on the internet this week... Everyone has a music bubble — here's yours, Earth week is a great time to learn more about micro-plastics with this interesting interactive, and Mister Rogers' cardigans have entered the chat. 👀

  5. A curated marketplace for Black-owned goods... "Love Thy Neighbor Store carries 12 different Black-owned brands under one shipping cost. They have great products — my favorite is the simple syrup and Gabbie hoop earrings." - Hannah N. 💫  Reader Rec

  6. A chili crisp you'll put on everything... If you haven't tried Fly By Jing Sichuan chili crisp yet, add it to the list, as well as this sweet potato, pork, and chili crisp dumpling recipe. 🥟

  7. An important PSA heading into the weekend... you do not need to be good at something the first time you try it. Or the second or third! Or ever, really. 😱

  8. Raise your hand if... you'll probably end up (virtually) attending multiple stops on Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart book tour. 🙋‍♀️

Sponsor Spotlight: Parade
One lesson learned from the loungewear days... 🙏✨

As we dive back into the dark corners of our closets this summer, we won't be compromising on comfort. If you're nodding along, we've got the best news: Parade, the colorful underwear brand we know and trust, finally launched their first ever bralette... and it's everything we've been waiting for.

The bralette is the essential Creative Basics layer to round out your collection — no imprints or digging, just ultra-soft comfort — and it's made with the inclusive sizing ethos that sets Parade apart in our book. (You can snag the bralette in sizes up to DDD/F!)

Parade is a sustainable underwear brand that uses 100% compostable packaging and certified recycled materials. Plus, they care for the wider community and donate a portion of every purchase to organizations like Planned Parenthood, The Loveland Foundation, the Okra Project, and more.

GNI readers can get 20% off your purchase of $40 or more here with code GIRLSNIGHTIN.

 take action and take care

cw: This section includes ideas to support those who have been impacted by police and gun violence, racism, and colonialism.

Ways to take action this week... Remember Ma'Khia Bryant as the vibrant child that she was. Donate to this fund for Darnella Frazier's healing from harassment, especially after testifying in the Derek Chauvin trial. Donate to the memorial fund supporting victims and their families following the devastating attack in Indianapolis. Honor the Earth and environment by learning about and supporting the movement to return land to the Indigenous peoples they belong to.

Ways to take care... pause to read through reflection questions for healing, RSVP to an event that centers mental health for the historically marginalized, and read about the power of poetry.
