Summer is here and masks are, increasingly, not. Many vaccinated Americans are putting away the most ubiquitous facial accessory of 2020, and the first half of 2021, in favor of reintroducing their nostrils to direct public air. It seems, however, that liberty of the lips after more than a year comes with a lot of weird feelings in a lot of directions. I explore this sweet, complicated freedom.

Researchers at the University of Notre Dame found substantial evidence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in more than half of popular cosmetic products, even though almost none were listed on ingredient labels. 
PFAS are commonly added to increase water resistance and durability, but they’re associated with a raft of health ailments ranging from cancers to high cholesterol. 
The study did not single out individual companies, but said the problem is endemic to the cosmetics industry. 
Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut have responded swiftly, proposing a bill that would ban the entire class of chemicals.
