Today is Juneteenth, a day that commemorates Union soldiers finally arriving in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce that the state’s enslaved Black people were free. Even before Congress passed a bill to make the day a national holiday earlier this week, there was a push by many to encourage Juneteenth observance more widely. In Fast Company’s recent Black In Tech package, about half the tech companies we surveyed told us that they had decided to make the day a holiday for employees beginning in 2020.

June 19 is about so much more than an extra day off; it’s a chance for individuals to practice active allyship with their Black coworkers. Read on to hear what Black employees are saying about what has changed since 2020’s racial justice protests, and for concrete tips and resources for how to advance the equity conversation at your workplace.
