IWillTeachYouToBeRich - Yep, money can make you happy

I know, I know. We’ve all heard the phrase “Money can’t buy you happiness.” 

Or its cousin, “You can’t take it with you.” 

Can you spot the psychological flaws in those quotes? They’re designed to make you feel satisfied with where you are because, of course, “money can’t make you happy.” 

But here’s the thing: money CAN buy happiness.

I know how weird that can sound, but it's true. And if you're willing to test it, you may be surprised by the results.

Let me give you an example. 

My wife and I were deciding what type of honeymoon we were going to take, and we were planning, like most Americans, on taking a nice eight-day trip somewhere. The plan was probably a safari. We went out to dinner with a couple of couples that we know, and we told them what we were planning. They said, “That’s amazing.” 

But then one of them said: “When we took a honeymoon we took six months off.” 

What the … Who are these people? 

But we started to think about it. “What if …?” We completely reframed how we thought about our honeymoon. And it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. We had an amazing six-week honeymoon. We traveled across four continents and were even able to take our parents along on this amazing trip. We spent a lot of time and money, but it was worth it to us. 

That’s the thing: money can buy us happiness — if we spend it on the things that matter most to us.
