The Cabify employees-turned-founders

Cabify's grown from a little taxi app to one of Spain's biggest tech companies — and earlier this year confirmed it's preparing to publicly list on the Madrid stock exchange.

The company's also hit another more subtle milestone: it has now been around for long enough to spawn a new generation of Spanish startups.

We spoke to the former employees of Cabify who've taken what they've learnt and started their own ventures.

Meet them here.

How to get into angel investing with ‘no’ money

Four months ago, Kim Fai Kok stood down from Swedish unicorn Truecaller to become a full-time angel investor — and he thinks a whole lot more people should do the same.

But don't you need a bucketload of money?

No, he says. This is what you actually need.

10 questions to ask before joining a startup

People applying for startup jobs should think more like investors. We spoke to Stride.VC founder Fred Destin about what questions prospective-employees should be asking before they join a company.

Here's what to ask.

\Food

France is now growing foie gras in a lab

Parisian company Gourmey is growing cruelty-free foie gras in a lab, using stem cells taken from duck eggs.

It's one of many promising European companies working on cell-based meat. But there’s one thing that could slow the continent down: its regulatory process is expected to take far longer than in the US or Asia, meaning lots of Europe’s companies are looking to foreign markets.

So what is a foie gras upstart to do?

What’s next for London fintech? We asked the experts

London’s fintechs raised $4.5bn last year — almost half of all Europe’s fintech capital. 2021 looks just as strong: this week, Wise went public valued at £8bn.

The full impacts of Brexit and Covid-19 on fintech are yet to be seen, but it’s clear the sector continues to thrive in London.

So what's next for fintech in the British capital?

News that Matters

💰 Untitled Ventures, based in London, has raised a new €100m fund focused on deeptech startups founded by eastern European entrepreneurs who have or are looking to relocate their business to western Europe and the USA.

💸 Revolut has struck a fundraising deal with SoftBank and Tiger Global that has valued the fintech at $33bn, a sixfold increase on its last private valuation.

💵 YuLife, a London life insurance startup, has raised $70m, giving it a $346m valuation. It aims to offer a wellness-orientated approach to life insurance.

💳 Railsbank, which builds APIs for banking, payment cards and credit products, has raised $70m in new funding, led by Anthos Capital.

🚴‍♂️ Collective Benefits, a British insurtech startup that provides insurance for gig economy and independent workers has raised £6m in new funding. Founded in 2019, the company currently insures 200k workers in over 20 countries.

🇫🇷 French startup Wecasa has raised $17.7m. The company specialises in hairdressing at home, and has recently added beauty treatments, massage and housekeeping to its services.

💪 Invest in women, now. Yesterday 24 female VC general partners, each from a different country in Europe, presented a report to Mariya Gabriel, the EU Commissioner for Innovation and Research, calling for action to ensure that more female investors get funded. They want to see a €3bn fund-of-funds established by the EU to anchor female-led VCs fund — and more. Read their requests — and sign their petition.
