Funding and Deals
Gusto Preps IPO
Congrats to my friends at Gusto! I’ve known Josh and the team for ages (flashback to when I wrote about its funding at $2B), and we personally use Gusto for payroll and healthcare at Fintech Today. Excited for these guys to IPO next year. In the meantime, the team announced a new funding round valuing it at ~$10B, and this Forbes story has a bunch of other fun details too.
Jerry Catches New Funding
Fintech app Jerry announced a new $75M round mere months after raising $28M. The deal gives it a valuation of $450M, about 4x the previous funding. Jerry’s goal is to help customers save time and money on car expenses, starting with a car insurance marketplace. The new funding will help the startup launch other marketplaces such as financing, repair, warranties, parking, and maintenance. Side note: there’s a lovely pattern with companies raising new rounds as soon as they announce a previous round. Key word here is “announce” since companies smartly try to announce funding as soon as they want to raise more and draw up some momentum ;)
Together With fintech_devcon
Wanna hang out with our very own Cokie Hasiotis, Charley Ma and other leaders from Square, Plaid, Visa, Alloy, Chime and more? From Sept 7-9th, engineers and product leaders will be gathering for fintech_devcon, a jam packed event put on by Moov with workshops from the technical leadership in fintech. Come with an idea for a product or feature and leave with an MVP. Moov is taking a ton of precautions as well so you don't also leave with Covid. There's 4X the needed space for social distancing, requiring masking from all attendees, and added hepa filtration on site in all rooms.

Coinbase Earnings
In one of its first earnings reports as a public company, Coinbase continued to see strong growth. Here are some highlights:
Hackers Stole Bitcoin But Gave It Back
No, I did not make this story up. In one of the biggest crypto thefts ever, hackers have returned nearly half of the $600M they stole through a vulnerability in Poly Network. The platform, which connects different blockchains so that they can work together, disclosed the attack Tuesday and asked to establish communication with the hackers, urging them to “return the hacked assets.” The hackers then began returning some of the funds they stole, sending a message to Poly Network saying they were “ready to return” the funds.
Crypto Cash Back
If you’re a Venmo Credit Card user, you’re about to be able to get your cash back in Bitcoin if you so choose. Bonus: these purchases will have no transaction fees associated with them. Cardholders will be able to purchase Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. I think they forgot to put Dogecoin here...
Bitcoin and Movies
While I’m not sure anyone will actually do this, it’s a great PR stunt. AMC announced that movie goers will be able to pay for tickets with Bitcoin. Again, not sure why someone would choose to do that since it makes it a taxable event, but hey, guess it’s a cool option.
