Email Image Blocking: Answering the What, Why, Where, Who, and How

Magan Le 2:36 PM: Hey, Carin! So I asked Email Geeks for quotes for the “why you shouldn’t send image only emails” blog post and was wondering if you wanted to add your two cents, too.

Carin Slater 2:37 PM: I would love to. I don’t have 2 cents.
I was firmly in the ‘no image only emails’ camp until I started researching it. Now I’m in the ‘it depends’ camp.

Magan Le 2:37 PM: Oooh!

Carin Slater 2:38 PM: I still don’t think it’s the best idea. but I don’t think it’s the worst thing if it’s done well. That being said, there are a lot of image only emails that are not done well.

Magic Spoon does it pretty well. I don’t like seeing their emails in my inbox (I have images turned off), but from an accessibility stand point, their ALT text is really well done and sounds good on a screen reader.

So if I have the images turned off, then it’s on me.

Wait. No. I talked myself back into the ‘no to all-image emails’ camp.

Carin Slater 2:43 PM: You just don’t know how your subscribers are experiencing your emails and you should give your subscribers the best experience no matter what. And that is not possible with all-image emails.

So yeah. Learn how to give your subscribers the best experience (and why you should) in the latest blog post. And keep an eye out for that quote somewhere on the interwebz.

I love the WCAG contrast checker, but Who Can Use takes contrast checking to a whole new level letting you see what your contrast will look like for different visual impairments.
