Tools for your product management problems

It’s tempting to believe that when you find the right product management tool, you’ve solved all your product management problems. In reality, a tool alone does not solve your product management problems. You need a tool that fits best with your particular approach to product management.

Finding your early fans

As product people, we always like to stay close to our customers (or at least, we should). But how do we find our true fans? And even more importantly, how do we find those fans early?

A few years back, I self-published a book about raising startup seed capital outside of major tech hubs. It didn’t win me any awards – but I’m definitely proud that I pushed myself to bring that book to life. But looking back, I think I’m even more proud of the way I brought it to life.

Early on in my process, I decided to involve the very audience I was writing for early. So early, I was still writing the book. I created a landing page, and asked people for help. I told them that they’d get a chance to see me writing and editing the book in real time. When it was finished, they’d even get a copy for free. All I asked in return was for feedback along the way and to help spread the word when the book launched. I still credit this process with being the reason my book made it to the top of Product Hunt when it launched.

Today, certain writers are doing similar things with Substack. In fact, one writer is seemingly skipping the binding altogether and serializing his work directly to Substack – where his customers will eventually pay a monthly fee to read his work.

Finding our early fans isn’t a concept that’s limited to publishing, though. When we’re building our tech products, how can we challenge ourselves to think similarly? Might our product be ripe to have a community developed and harnessed early? How do we get them to love our product before our product ever even launches?

I don’t have answers here. I just have a lot of questions. You can ponder these as you enjoy the weekend!

The 11 must have tools for product managers.  Product managers generally need to bridge the gap between teams and work cross-functionally with development, marketing, and support to lead teams from a product’s conception through launch. Product management tooling needs to support that gap spanning. Leeyen Rogers describes eleven tools for product managers to help you select the right one for your situation.

Churn rate is one of the main metrics of any SaaS business, with figuring out how to reduce it a key priority at every stage of growth. At LiveIntent, the team prevents churn and encourages repeat product adoption by building campaigns with rules to automatically engage users with either an email or in-platform message.
