The Little Stuff Is the Big Stuff

How I deepened my relationship with my mom

by Olivia Rogine, Director of Brand Strategy at Girls' Night In

Hi there,

Every Tuesday afternoon, without fail, I head out for a neighborhood walk and call my mom. What began as a way to quickly check in during the initial days of the pandemic soon became a tool we used to reconnect and improve our relationship.

We unpack the week since we’ve last talked, discuss what we’re looking forward to in the week ahead, and sometimes engage in some much needed “Tuesday to trash talk” (i.e. venting about everything and everyone 🙃). It’s cathartic to have a regular space beyond therapy that’s entirely free of judgment.

The connection we’ve built between the hours of 4:30 and 5:30 pm each Tuesday is unlike anything I’ve experienced in the nearly 29 years of knowing my mother. This has been a new chapter of meeting one another where we’re at, as Sarah (my mom) and Olivia (me), beyond our previously established existence as mother and daughter.

The comfort that comes with our weekly calls is real and deep and feels a lot like coming home. The low stakes and frequent framework of our check-ins enables us to share the ordinary and mundane moments in our daily lives. These are the things that would have gone otherwise unnoticed—like a recent chance encounter with a high school acquaintance at a crosswalk, or the heirloom tomatoes I bought at the farmer’s market. The other week, we swapped stories about our daily routines—my mom told me about a new water aerobics class at her local gym and I shared an update on my breakfast intake (a constant struggle for a non-morning person!). Through our check-ins, I’ve learned that the little stuff is really the big stuff.

In the process of these calls—which have now happened for 77 weeks straight—our relationship has completely transformed. It’s taught me that it’s never too late to change the relationships with the people who matter most in your life. Sometimes, it’s as simple as picking up the phone.

Talk soon,
Olivia Rogine, Director of Brand Strategy at Girls' Night In

weekly picks

this week's picks were curated by Olivia Rogine
  • I blow out my hair tools every time I go abroad without fail (even when I attempt to research fancy power converters). For a recent trip, I brought a heatless backup which I sadly ended up needing (RIP to my Drybar curler) and it worked wonders!
  • Layering is the key to a great fall outfit. Grayson's wardrobe staples have made it easy to layer with a variety of flannels that range from luxuriously lightweight to super soft and cozy. With the code GNI20, you can upgrade your style today and get 20% off your first purchase. Sponsor

  • There’s a lot of junk out there that enters my inbox and goes unopened. But Fresh Sends’ newsletter, Midweek Feels, never falls into that category. I’m a big believer in love notes, thoughtful cards, and small gestures and this mini newsletter is a constant reminder of the kindness that exists in our world—I use it as a way to nudge myself to pass along similar acts of kindness.
  • “I've been loving Tanaïs's lip oils, and am especially into their hibiscus gloss, which is infused with coconut and pomegranate seed oils. The color is somehow both subtle and rich, the seed oils are nourishing, and the gloss smells like the platonic ideal of a summer trip.” -R.O. Kwon, author of The Incendiaries and coeditor of KINK Guest Rec

  • Nala Sinephro is a young musician from the UK that has quickly earned a spot in my 9-5 playlist. Her debut album Space 1.8 is full of beautiful instrumentals that offer a calming ambiance while I’m heads down in work.

  • “I made cashew cream from scratch for the first time (was super easy! highly recommend!) for this Creamy Cashew Udon with Crispy Mushrooms recipe. I always want to sneak chili oil into everything, so the dish did not disappoint.” -Mary Anne, GNI team
  • New product alert! Nearly every member of the GNI team can’t get enough of Indie Lee so we all were THRILLED to see the Face For All collection grow with a new addition, the Brightening Cream.

  • I find a lot of comfort and solace in poetry. All Familiar Things Were Once Strange by Sophia Short feels like reflections and insights from a close friend and is the most recent addition to my growing poetry collection.
  • GBBS is back today!! Meet the new bakers and know that all will be right with the world.
