This week’s money mood: Your money mindset

Over the past few weeks, financial wellness has been the name of the game here at Ellevest. Two weeks ago, we talked about how to build a strong financial foundation (the first main component of a financial wellness practice). Last week, we covered how to make yourself a money roadmap (the second).

And so this week is all about the third and final component: how to improve your money mindset. Depending on where you’re sitting, feeling *good* about money may seem unthinkable — but it doesn’t have to be. We can reject harmful money myths (especially the ones about women being bad at it 😒). We can normalize talking about money with friends. And we can build our financial knowledge, motivation, and confidence.

Let’s do this.

How to build — and maintain — a healthy relationship with money

Changing your money mindset may not happen overnight, but it’s not impossible. Here are some actionable steps you can take right now.

LET’S WORK ON IT >

Why buy the f***ing latte?

Because, as Sallie says, they’re delicious. Don’t listen to the people who tell you that buying things for yourself is selfish or irresponsible. Here’s how to stop feeling guilty about spending your own dang money.

STOP STRESSING, START SIPPING >

How about now? Sign up for our next workshop to help you negotiate a raise, promotion, or salary offer. Because part of a good money mindset means developing the confidence to ask for what you deserve.

Journal through it

Here are some journaling prompts to start thinking about it more deeply:

  1. What’s your earliest memory of your relationship to money? Did you have an allowance? How did you spend it?

  2. What’s one money habit you learned as a kid or teenager that you still carry with you today? Does it make you feel good? Does it make you feel bad? Why?

  3. What are some money habits you wish you’d picked up when you were younger? Are they things you can implement today?
