The GIST - Hope the door hits him

Hey there!

Quote of the day
We just opened a new arena here in Seattle, and I happened to be in there the other day for the opening of the Kraken game. And...it was tempting. The thoughts of playing there were very tempting. I'll leave you with that.
— WNBA star Sue Bird, responding to questions about her retirement during an appearance on ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast. All together now: One more year!

🏒 NHL: Don’t let the door hit ya

The GIST: Following an investigation into the team’s mishandling of sexual assault allegations in 2010, Chicago general manager (GM) Stan Bowman has resigned.
The no-background: Earlier this year, a former Chicago player filed a lawsuit claiming that former video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted him during the team’s 2010 Stanley Cup title run.
- According to reports, a coach at the time was made aware of the allegations against Aldrich and brought it to the attention of team leadership, including Bowman. You’d think that would lead to an investigation, a response...anything.
- Instead, Aldrich was awarded a Stanley Cup ring and moved on to new jobs, including coaching at a high school in Michigan, where he was later convicted of criminal sexual conduct involving a 17-year-old. Just awful.
The latest: Chicago hired an outside firm to conduct an independent review of the allegations, and their findings were released yesterday. In response, Chicago released a lackluster statement, Bowman resigned (before he could be fired) and the NHL fined the team $2 million, half of which will go to local organizations that support survivors.
The bigger picture: Bowman’s departure comes 11 years too late, and this story is yet another example of the culture of silence and misogyny that persists in sports.
- While Bowman’s departure is the expected reaction to this latest news, the NHL and (the sports world in general) must proactively work to eradicate this toxicity. There’s no excuse.
⚾️ MLB World Series: We watched so you don’t have to

The GIST: Although this is far from our preferred World Series matchup, here’s the gist on the start of baseball’s Fall Classic.
Game 1: Despite losing star pitcher Charlie Morton to a right fibula fracture (ouch), last night’s Game 1 was all Atlanta Braves. They scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 6–2 to jump out to an early series lead over the Houston Astros.
- And not only did Atlanta win the game, America won too. Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies stole a base, which means free tacos for everybody (yes, seriously). No better way to celebrate Taco Tuesday.
Game 2: First pitch is tonight at 8:09 p.m. ET. Atlanta’s star pitcher Max Fried (who uncharacteristically struggled in his last outing) will face Houston’s José Urquidy (who also underperformed the last time he pitched).

Matchy match: Sports bras and tank tops and gym totes, oh my. Under Armour has a full collection to help you finish your holiday shopping before the season even starts.

⚽️🎓🏀🏒 Quick hits

⚽️USWNT: In the final game of Carli Lloyd’s incredible 17-year USWNT career, her teammates stepped up to send her off with a win. Lindsey Horan (who will wear Lloyd’s No. 10 in the future) opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the squad’s 6–0 victory over South Korea. What a sendoff.
🎓🏀College basketball: The season tips off in just 13 days, and UConn’s Paige Bueckers (pronounced BECK-ers) is already making headlines. Bueckers was unanimously voted to the AP’s preseason All-America team, with Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston, Baylor’s NaLyssa Smith and Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard rounding out the squad.
⚽️NWSL: New stadium, who dis? Kansas City NWSL (who’ll finally have a permanent name on Saturday) plans to build a $70 million, 11,000 seat stadium — the first top-division facility built specifically for a NWSL team — with opening slated for 2024. The countdown is on.
🇺🇸🏒Hockey: Don’t panic, but Team USA women’s hockey lost to Team Canada for the fourth straight game on Monday, in their second of nine exhibition games against each other. And as if this rivalry wasn’t already spicy enough, the squads exchanged words (and punches!) post game.
- Now we’ll wait until November 21st to watch them hunt for redemption.
