• They attached a pig’s kidney to a dead¹ human and it functioned which a doctor said is a significant step in the pursuit of transplanting animal organs in people. It could address the organ shortage, the AP reported. PETA wasn’t happy about it though.

• COVID-19 cases in Papua New Guinea are up and the morgues are full.

• The Chief Medical Examiner role is one step closer to being filled on Guam. Hallelujah. The chief medical examiner is responsible for all post-mortem examinations on the island. But, historically, the doctor would also investigate and perform autopsies for the other Micronesian islands so this is a regional win. My favorite forensic pathologist,² Dr. Aurelio Espinola, retired after 25 years on the job in 2019.

• FSM President Panuelo said saving humanity is more important than this fuss over y’alls Indo-Pacific.

The Pacific Island Times recently published this article with the headline: Defense of Guam is 'the main thing,' according to security experts

It reminded me of another article I came across that was published in 1984.

In that piece, the then-counsel for the U.S. State Department told Congress, “The first goal of the compact negotiations was to protect U.S. security interests and maintain our strategic position there.” Edward Derwinski added that the administration feels the compact and its associated agreements “accomplish that objective,” the article stated.

He said: FIRST GOAL.³
