Show, Don't Tell

How to pick the best website platform for your online store
This week we're excited to share the very first guest post on our blog. In it our friend and Shopify guru Shelley of Launch Party breaks down the difference between a website and a marketplace, does an overview of the three common web platforms (Squarespace, Wordpress, and Shopify) including the pros and cons of each, and explains why Shopify is the best platform if you run an online store. The post includes several examples of clear, clean, well-designed pages built with Shopify. Because there is no better way to learn, than from an example, and you know we love an example.

Good Links Round Up

1. How to take 5 minutes on a Sunday to effectively plan out your week
In this short Reel social media expert, Natasha, takes you on a quick tour of how she uses her Sundays to organize her week. We love that this isn’t just all online either (yay paper planners and colored markers!) -- she walks through how to use a mix of digital and physical planning to identify and schedule out big goals for each week and avoid overstuffing your days.

2. 4 things to quit doing at your desk
Just like the tip above about planning the week, sometimes we just need a little reminder. In this short, lighthearted and to-the-point article Justin Jackson lists four key activities to stop doing at your desk so you can produce your best work. BTW we found this in the Rational Creatives newsletter, which is also a great read.

3. What to include in your website footer
Ya’ll know we love a “show, don’t tell” moment. In this post, e-commerce copywriter Anna K. Bradshaw covers the 7 main links that should be in your site’s footer, optional elements that can make it stronger, and design tips to ensure it is as clear as possible. The end of the post includes some real-life examples of great... and not-so-great footers and why.

4. How to write email subject lines editors will actually open
One of the most important parts of your pitch is the email’s subject line. Many editors will decide to open, or not open, your email purely based on the subject line. We dug into the pitch archives of our sister company, Wolf PR, and pulled together eight examples of what to do and what not to do when you're writing your pitch's subject line.

5. Filming and editing in Instagram Reels
This 5-minute video is a quick overview of how to edit multiple video clips and add text for Reels. It walks through how to do this from your phone within Instagram OR in Premium Rush, a free app from Adobe (the easier, more user-friendly option). The second half of the video shows you how to add and time text as well as download and test the video.

Wolf Craft Pro Tip

There’s so many great reasons to pitch local and regional publications.
Securing a spot in smaller publications can be easier! But, that’s not the only reason you should pitch them. Smaller publications often include locally-made products and they have a dedicated readership who like to shop local and support brands from the region. If you're a retailer or if your product is available at a local brick-and-mortar shop this is a way to support those relationships!

A few examples of local and regional print publications: Time Out, Southern Living, New York Cottages & Gardens, Colorado Homes, California Style & Culture, and Canadian Living.

Once you start looking, you’ll realize there really are SO many regional publications. If you live in a town or small city, where your home newspaper isn’t the New York Times (one of the hardest publications to secure a placement in), look for opportunities to pitch to your town’s newspaper!

Also be on the lookout for local blogs like, Brokelyn webmag, California Weekend, Cool Cleveland, and LA Weekly.

Securing a placement is never a shoe-in, so even with smaller publications be sure to do some research to determine if your product or project is a good fit!

Wins

How amazing are these vessels? Do I want one for every room in my apartment? Yes. They are made by the super talented artist, and 1-1 client, Carmen Ellis!

We talked a little bit after this piece hit as well, and she said "... this definitely makes me feel like it is possible and I'm starting to feel more and more confident with pitching/emailing press as I keep doing it!" which is SO INCREDIBLY SPOT ON.

As silly as I feel typing this out- pitching is a practice and I think that

  1. it has to be an ongoing part of your business for it to be effective
  2. like any other practice- working out, making art, parenting, learning a language, etc. - it is incredibly intimidating but the more you do it, the better you get at it.

We're so happy for Carmen's amazing win in Business of Home, and thankful for her way of looking and talking about *the work.*

Thanks for giving us some time in your inbox! If you have any questions send us a note, we'll always reply.
