The DO Lectures - The Lonely Car Park.

Hi There, 

Not every turning point comes with a signpost.

I remember this one.

I was in New York and I was in a car park sitting on a kerb outside this massive warehouse.

I could hear through the open side door the name of the next speaker being announced.

AND IT WAS ME.

And 1,550 people started clapping…

And I was having this ACTUAL conversation with myself.
 

‘I COULD DO A RUNNER.

I COULD RUN NOW.

NO ONE WOULD SEE ME.’

Then someone gently tapped me on the shoulder and told me it was my turn.

In that moment, I visualised this DOODLE.

It was of a removal lorry. And the two figures were my kids.

And they were crying because we must move from the home they love.

ALL BECAUSE I DIDN’T DO THE TALK.

As I write it now, it sounds a little bonkers.

But that doodle got me up on stage.

It shook me out of my self-talk.

And I did a heartfelt talk.

Not perfect. But they knew my town was making jeans again.

And they knew it mattered to me.

I tell this story because I had told myself for too long that I wasn’t good at doing talks.

But something changed in that moment.

I made a decision.

If I was going to do something, I had to give it my best.

Otherwise, that removal van would be a real thing.

And so, dabbling became the new enemy.

Second only to being worried about what other people think.

The tyranny of dabbling.

When you start your company of one, it’s you against the world.

But mostly it’s you versus you.

• It’s the lazy you versus the determined you.
• It’s the safe you versus the ambitious you.
• ​It’s the optimistic you versus the negative you.

For some, they fly.

But for some, they get stuck.

And the one thing I have witnessed is that those who are stuck are mostly playing it safe.

Half in.
