Album Daily Week #104 [Novermber 8th - 12th]

Ahhh yes it's that time of year again. Not even a week past Halloween and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" has probably been streamed a bagillion times. The real travesty of this time of year isn't just that over-the-top Christmas song fans completely takeover the airwaves, it's that we seemingly jump over one the music of one of the most underrated holidays of the year, Thanksgiving. Never heard of Thanksgiving music? Sure you have. From songs about food, like The Beatles "Wild Honey Pie" or songs about giving thanks, like "I've Got Plenty To Be Thankful For" by Bing Crosby, Thanksgiving #szn is jam-packed with underrated tunes and lesser-known hits that are sure to keep you in the Holiday spirit WITHOUT having to listen to Little Drummer Boy for the 15th time. Check out this article breaking down top 41 Thanksgiving related bops.

If It Comes Down To It

Ruby Waters

Album Cover 2
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: October 16th, 2020
Top Tracks: Fox, Quantum Physics, On the Rocks
Similar Artists: Arlo Parks, JJ Wilde, Julia Jacklin

Powerful, passionate, and delicate. If It Comes Down To It is a superb singer/songwriter’s album for girls that like to smoke cigs and wear cool crop tops (and me - a male who doesn’t do either of those things). Waters is from Ontario, Canada so shout out to the great white north of the Americas and turns out she’s also a Reddit success story - having gone viral on said platform with her flagship song “Sweet Sublime” a few years back according to CBC.

Lonesome No More

Laura Jean Anderson

Cover 2
Genre:  Blues
Release Date: October 12, 2018
Top Tracks: Lonesome No More, Call It What It Is, Take It Back Now
Similar Artists:  Jamie Drake, The Wild Reeds, Madison Cunningham

There’s a deeply nostalgic quality to Laura Jean Anderson’s voice. It’s cozy and warm with just a little bit of rasp: reminiscent of a smoking candle. The Washington-based singer-songwriter was raised strictly Mormon and studied classical music at CalArts. She turned away from these highly structured and codified systems after a backpacking trip in Peru. Due to a stolen bag, Anderson ended up busking her way back home. She credits the trip for bringing her back to her roots and encouraging her to make more approachable music. There’s something here for everyone: golden era style crooning, easy listening, dark heartbreak anthems, and gritty rock. Combine that with poignant and universal lyrics and this album is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with something everyone can relate to.

Bubba

Kaytranada

Cover 3
Genre: Hip-Hop
Release Date: December 13th, 2019
Top Tracks: Vex Oh, 10%, The Worst In Me
Similar Artists: Toro y Moi, Duckwrth, Channel Tres

Through and through, Bubba is a masterpiece. It comes as the second full project from the Canadian phenom, Kaytranada, and simply does not miss. The mastery comes with his roots as an electronic producer and his consistent use of crisp house, techno, and dance beats … and most songs on the album start with just that, a beat: usually a simple percussive rhythm or groovy baseline that is eventually layered with silky synths and hip-hop or R&B sampling. Kaytranada spares no expense with these samples and includes notable collaborators like Pharrell, Tinashe, and GoldLink. Ultimately, Bubba ends up manifesting as both a project with incredibly complex quality but also a seemingly simple groove all the way through. Read more about Kaytranada's grammy-winning album here

Animal

LUMP, Laura Marling, Mike Lindsay

Cover 4
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: July 30, 2021
Top Tracks: Animal, Climb Every Wall, Phantom Limb
Similar Artists: Tom Rosenthal, This Is The Kit, Haim

Laura Marling worked with collaborator Mike Lindsay to create the second album for their duo LUMP at the same time as writing her most recent album Songs For Our Daughter. The two could not be more wildly different. While Songs is a beautiful album following the tradition of Laura Marling (softly sung numbers about disintegrating relationships that make you drift away in front of a running faucet) LUMP is off the wall. The duo seems to have taken all of the bits they wouldn’t normally be able to fit into other work and put them all together to see what happens. The result is an ethereal electronic album that keeps shifting from moment to moment. Filled with moments of pop, psychedelic, and rock, the shifting tone refuses to be held by genre boundaries. The result is primal and a lot of fun. Equally fun is the LUMP figurehead- a bouncy animated monster of sorts who looks a little bit like the Philly Flyer’s notorious mascot Gritty. The creature features in their photoshoots, announcements, and music videos. Marling even learned some coding over quarantine to create animated videos of them. Here they feature heavily in a music video from LUMP’s first release.

Something To Hold

Max Boyle

Cover 5
Genre: Pop
Release Date: April 27th, 2018
Top Tracks: Angel, On My Mind, Her Universe
Similar Artists: Ed Sheeran, Vance Joy, John Mayer

This sexy beast can SING. Max Boyle, famously known for capturing America’s heart on the stage of The Voice where John Legend blocked Kelly Clarkson to steal him for his own team, is a singer/songwriter/musician out of Toledo, Ohio. This mans has got more range than a military training facility. More range than Steph Curry. More range than any of the mountains you’ve ever seen, and he has that range out on full display on Something to Hold. If you can’t tell, we’re excited about this find, and now’s your chance to get in on the ground floor with Max Boyle! His falsetto is absolutely no joke, and Max just recently came out with a new song called “Fire Away” that demonstrates his timeless highs, a low section that you just don’t hear anywhere else, and a bit of that Nashville twang for you folks on Broadway. If the album art on Something to Hold isn’t touching enough, press play on this EP and let your mind wander thinking about those you love.

If you’re loving this EP, go check out Max Boyle’s website to learn more like how he’s worked with the likes of Usher and Taylor Swift, tours in Nashville + Toledo + Chicago + Atlanta + LA + and even get yourself a stylish Max Boyle long sleeve tee.

Still haven’t had enough of Max Boyle? Here are 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Max Boyle that are a lot of fun. One of the best being… Max’s musical inspiration of Ed Sheeran led him to perform the song Wayfaring Stranger on The Voice that catapulted him to sure stardom.
