Fortune - Welcome to the new era of leadership
![]() The Leadership Report It’s not just your imagination. Leadership is changing. A global pandemic and seismic changes in where (and how) we work have all contributed to a massive rethinking of who we want our leaders to be—and how we expect them to communicate. In this special report, Fortune’s writers delve deep into the issues and trends reshaping the C-suite now. CSCOs are having more impact on strategy—and many now report directly to the CEO.
“It’s no longer an accounting-only task. It has become a rapid problem-solving role,” says McKinsey partner Ankur Agrawal. More companies are encouraging employees to bring their "whole selves" to work—and work through challenging feelings such as rage and frustration. As a young female immigrant tech CEO, Fidji Simo has tried both fitting in and standing out. But by now she’s learned to embrace her outsider status. Research is showing that empathy is something malleable, not fixed. Which is good news for bosses—and employees. Workplaces may be losing employees by failing to understand their priorities, values, and need for belonging, recent research from EY says.
