Rebecca Zhou is the cofounder & CEO of Soft Services, the first skincare company focused on the body. She, her husband David, and their dog Chino are based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Livingston Manor in upstate New York. She loves food, hydrotherapy, and the new, and dislikes running, cilantro, and the status quo.

Her six-word bio: Aquarius sun + Virgo rising = pragmatic optimist.
Think about the last time you truly embraced “downtime.” What were you doing and what did it feel like?
Before COVID, I would get my downtime in spurts of active rest—a vacation, a weekend in upstate NY, a night dancing out with friends. But as those moments of escape have been less accessible, I’ve been working on finding less novel ways to get my r&r. A few things that have been working for me:

  • Simple meditative breathing (aka deep breaths) on my morning walk
  • Listening to Brian Eno while I work
  • Watching an episode of food TV, then trying something new in the kitchen inspired by it
  • Setting up the new Apple “Focus” modes
  • Craniocradle for relief from jaw tightness and an OFFHOURS Homecoat to get cozy before bed
  • Lying face up outside, watching the clouds move and the world turn

What song do you know every lyric to?

Ariana Grande’s “Sweetener” album. I would listen to the whole album from start to finish on repeat while I worked all of 2020, which gave the effect that the album is one long song.

What small thing is bringing you joy lately?

Finding new ways to use dill, my current favorite fresh herb. It’s a kitchen staple for me after I started making the sauce from this Crispy-Skinned Fish recipe. I’ve been chaotically adding it to salads, sandwiches, and homemade dressings ever since.

My current LSHT (low stakes hot take) is most glasses of red wine are made better with a dash of cold bubbly seltzer.

If you had to name 3 things that help you walk away from a weekend Sunday Scary-free what would they be?

  • A long walk outside or hike (while listening to a podcast!). I try to switch up what I listen to. Recently, I've been trying to better understand the blockchain—this episode was particularly educational, though I don’t typically listen to Tim Ferriss.

  • A hot bath (with a full body Buffing Bar scrub down).

  • A home cooked meal using whatever I picked up at the farmers' market. Pro-tip: leisurely chop and prep while watching something on TV. Currently: Girlfriends.

A ridiculously fun thing I did recently was roller skating at a "Rihanna v Britney Spears" party at the rink in Prospect Park. I went with my friend Brandon who is a die hard Britney fan. I luckily made it to the end of the night without falling but my legs were sore for a good week.

What’s the most recent photo on your phone?

Photo of some charred veg (radicchio, acorn squash, asparagus, potatoes) I made for dinner.

What do you do when you’re feeling stuck?

As simple as this sounds, a phone call with a good friend or family member. Nothing like a fresh perspective from someone who knows you well.

What’s on your night stand?
A massage ball, glass nail file, Tony’s Chocolonely bar, Carea Cream, hair ties, eyeglasses, and a good book.

What small businesses do you love?

There are so many, but a few of my favorites:

  • Edy’s Grocer, a Lebanese deli in Greenpoint. It's Soft Service’s office lunch go-to.
  • Cait’s Key Lime Pies! The gluten-free crust is so good. She delivers to BK, NYC, and Queens and often does pop-ups in Philly.
  • VeraSavaKnit in Kyiv, Ukraine on Etsy! I wore the knitted hat I bought from her all last winter.

Pictured: key lime pie from Cait's (left); a knitted hat from VeraSavaKnit (right).

Lightning round!

  • Favorite bagged snack food? Mi Nina’s Jalapeño Agave Tortilla Chips, recently discovered at my neighborhood deli.

  • Celebrity you would most want to show up at a cocktail party you’re hosting? Barack Obama or Billie Eilish.

  • Semi-random thing always found in your purse? Smushed granola bar, usually this one.
  • Your #1 skincare pro tip? Don’t forget your neck! Moisturizer and sunscreen!

  • Miscellaneous item you swear by under $25? OFLA Touch Knife, a compact box cutter you can add to your keyring for ~$2.
