The dark underbelly of militarism, surveillance, and repression

You won’t read about these stories anywhere else. That’s why I’m asking for your $5 donation to The Intercept

Don’t let anyone tell you that Congress is hopelessly gridlocked: A huge bipartisan majority just voted to give the Pentagon $25 billion more than it asked for.

Yes, the Biden administration followed through on President Donald Trump’s plan to withdraw from Afghanistan — but now says it plans to leave the U.S. military footprint around the world virtually unchanged.

Apparently that’s not hawkish enough for a group of ex-CIA directors and national security officials who are now lobbying President Joe Biden to start threatening Iran by “orchestrating high-profile military exercises.”

These stories don’t make headlines in most of the media. For critical reporting on the U.S. war machine, you have to turn to The Intercept.

Reader support frees our nonprofit newsroom from the daily pressures of advertising and clickbait, so our investigative reporters can focus on exposing the dark underbelly of militarism, surveillance, and repression.

This year has been a tough year for fundraising, and right now we’re less than 8 hours away from a critical year-end deadline. We’ve set a goal of raising $700,000 by midnight tonight — and we’ve still got $30,000 left to go.

Can you take this moment to make your first donation to The Intercept? By becoming a member before midnight, you’ll ensure that we can continue breaking stories others won’t.

Thank you,

Jeremy Scahill
