💸 Money Cheat Sheet: Should You Do a Rollover?

Old job, old 401(k)? Here’s what you need to know. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

This week’s money mood: Time for a 401(k) rollover? 🤔

Question: What happens to your 401(k) when you change jobs?

Answer: It’s up to you. Sometimes you can leave it where it is, but that can make things hard to keep track of (and potentially mess up your asset allocation). You might be able to combine it with your new 401(k) if your new plan allows it. Orrrrrr … you could roll it over into an IRA.

One big upside to the rollover: You often have more control over what you’re invested in. Hello, impact investing! And (shameless plug) if you roll it over to Ellevest, you’ll get gender-specific investment advice, too.

But still, there’s plenty to think through. So whether you recently changed jobs, plan to change jobs soon, or just want to bookmark some handy info for the future — check out the resources below.

in∙vol∙un∙tar∙y cash-out

Aka a “mandatory cash-out” or an “involuntary distribution,” this is when your employer goes ahead and rolls your 401(k) into an IRA on your behalf. (But they’re only allowed to do it if you have less than $5K in your account and take too long to tell them what you want to do with the money.)
