“We all have to decide we’re going to do things for ourselves, and that it has to not be about what other people will say or think or what they will believe.”

Two action figures sat on Kelli Anderson’s shelf for a decade before she realized that they're a jumping off point for stories that would inspire ambition, courage, and discovery. In her talk for CreativeMornings/DC, she uncovers the toys’ backstories, both of their creator, a visionary Black toymaker named Sterling Ashby, and the Black historical figures they are based on: Benjamin Banneker and Matthew Henson. Sit back and listen to Kelli Anderson tell stories full of daring and Black excellence.

As a Digital Artist and Multimedia Producer, Kelli Anderson’s works have explored identity, culture, and community. She is passionate about telling stories that uplift BIPOC people, that center on futurist ideas, and are affirmed by cultural history. Anderson’s works have been featured at The Making Of…Live at SFMOMA, The John F. Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, and Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum.
