5amUKRAINE time Vladimir Putin addressed the Russian people in a televised announcement to confirm Russia would carry out a “special military operation” in Ukraine. Moments later at least 4 explosions were heard just outside the city centre of Kyiv.

5RUSSIAN PLANES and one helicopter have reportedly been shot down by Ukrainian armed forces as the country now enters a month-long state of emergency issued at midnight on Thursday. Russia has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

51stARTICLE of the UN charter which allows for “self defence” has been provided as Russia’s justification for military operations.  Putin has warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would “lead to consequences you have never seen in history.”

27YEAR OLD who sparked a 5-hour siege at an Apple store in Amsterdam less than 48 hours ago has died in hospital from his injuries. The man had entered the store with 2 guns demanding some €200m (£165m; $230m) in cryptocurrency before being deliberately hit by a police car after chasing his last hostage out of the building.

700TROOPS of the U.S National guard have been approved for deployment in Washington ahead of the arrival of around 25 separate trucker convoys protesting against pandemic restrictions. One Californian convoy has already raised almost $500,000 (£369,000) to support the protest.

4.64%RISE in the price of oil between Tuesday’s high of $97.76 a barrel and today’s 7 year high of $102.30 highlights the impact of Russian military action. Russia is the second biggest exporter of crude oil and is also the world's largest natural gas exporter.
