TODAYS COMMENTARY Get a Cup of Coffee & Enjoy Catching Up!

BUY LIST UPDATE: One stock added yesterday, one stock beat EPS by a full $1.40 yesterday morning on the BUY List! Today we have one stock reporting earnings. I’m excited about it but in this market even great companies are selling post earnings gains.

Todays Market Observations: Inflation numbers will be reported today (See Economic Calendar Above). Unless the numbers are sky high, I don’t suspect we will run into too much market trouble not already heading our way. Indeed we should expect at minimum one quarter or more of rapidly increasing inflation as the Fed slowly increases interest rates (A mistake as I have written from the start, I think they should raise them more). We may touch 10% this year unless the Fed takes some painful measures, but it looks as though they are unwilling to do so. Consensus inflation estimate today is 7.9%. It would not surprise me if it were either higher or lower. If lower, expect a large jump the following month. If higher we very well could be heading for double digits.

China Strikes Again: A few days ago we learned that China was having issues with their grain harvest. This came on top of already unsettling news of Hungary restricting grain exports, issues with Russian grain exports, & the invasion of Ukraine cutting off additional grain supply. Mixed in with already high fertilizer prices, aaaannnnnd we have a food price problem here. Add this into inflation expectations. However yesterday China announced that they would halt gas & diesel exports (Finished product). So add this into the already piss poor energy situation … namely the ban’s or reductions of Russian oil, the fact that this administration refuses to make a deal with US oil producers, the Saudi’s wont take the Presidents phone calls, Biden banned all new leases on federal lands & shut down drilling in some areas completely, & the fact that energy companies are refusing to spend the millions required to invest in new production unless they get some assurance that their investment wont be destroyed once the crises is over.

Gas Prices: Energy will no doubt increase inflation & decrease the amount of disposable income people have to make purchases. This should be on your mind with every trade you make. There is a lot of political hay made about the number of leases & permits already in existence. Here are a number of reasons oil companies aren’t drilling.

• Not every lease has oil, not every permit is designed to produce oil. Folks, you need leases & permits to build the pipes to & from the wells, you need leases & permits just to drive across the land, you need leases & permits for every bit of energy infrastructure you build on or near a drilling sight. Therefore not all leases & permits relate directly to removing oil from the ground, but rather enabling drilling. So don’t let anyone point to the number of leases & permits & proclaim “they’re not using them for production.”

• Many leases & permits are for surveying & drilling to test the quality of the probable drilling location. And even if they find it, they will still need more leases & permits to do everything in the point’s above & below.

• Drilling takes a massive amount of investment. Surveying costs money. Environmental reviews cost money. You need wells, piping, & infrastructure. You need to hire crews, get permits & permissions to access the sites, survey the sites, drill the sites, drive on the sites etc. If you are moving wide load heavy equipment, you need permission from each state you drive it through & the federal government. You need to prove you meet all the requirements & training prior to getting approved. In the end the benefits must outweigh the costs & if we have a government unfriendly to fossil fuels, oil companies are more likely to forgo such investment until they have a government they can work with. Otherwise they risk loosing their investment when just one permit or lease can hold up an entire project (Especially necessary unforeseen leases or permits that come up as the project progresses).

• President Biden has banned all new leases & permits on Federal land, stopped all drilling & exploration in a number of areas for environmental reasons (Like ANWAR), & has thus far been unwilling to meet & make deals with oil CEO’s as he has electric vehicle manufacturers, unions, semiconductor companies, & infrastructure related corporations. Despite making the claim that he will do “everything in his power” to mitigate the pain at the pump, President Biden has not once met with oil executives (no summit/conference at the White House) … which gives you an idea of how much this administration is unwilling to work with oil companies for political reasons.
