Good morning!

The daffodils’ vibrant green stems are currently on full display in our neighborhood, their yellowing buds just beginning to push through. On Saturday, I went to a baby shower where floral dresses and open-toe sandals reigned. On Sunday, during an outdoor brunch, I began to sweat in my too-heavy jacket, which I happily peeled off. I squinted into a blue sky, the sun beaming down.

Spring is finally here (well, technically, on March 20th), and as we enter a new phase of covid* in the U.S., I’m feeling a certain twinkle of hope I haven’t felt in a while. Knock on wood. (*shoutout to caretakers of little ones under five and the immunocompromised, who may not feel the same right now.)

But with the coming of a potentially-social spring (so many weddings!) and some rituals slowly rolling back to “normal,” I’m also experiencing an adjustment period. Mainly: pre-event anxiety. I admit I googled “how to have a conversation with strangers” before one of my plans. I immediately exited out of the article, feeling like a total weirdo. But...I forgot how to do this. I have to talk to people I don't know? In a space other than my home? (By the way, the event ended up being fine; really fun, even!) I'm both excited and nervous to work up my conversation muscles again.

How are you anticipating the arrival of spring, and with it more get-togethers? Are you excited to meet new people? Anxious? Practicing opening lines? Let me know.

Alisha Ramos

This Week's Recommendations

  1. Been guzzling down more water these days thanks to this easy-to-use app that sends a reminder every few hours. (Yes, you have to pay for it, but don't you prefer your peace, without a barrage of ads?)

  2. Watching The Dropout and wondering if we'll ever get tired of scammer-based entertainment? (Also see: this related read  from the NYT on the women behind the show.) Also worth a watch: Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, if you can stomach retellings of tech-bro-culture.

  3. Things that only get better with age: artistry and innovation; and the heritage watch brand Bulova—founded in 1875—has it in spades. This diamond-set, water-resistant piece, in particular, would make a dazzling and practical investment for your everyday uniform.  Sponsor

  4. Listening to the lively and at-times raw podcast, Feeling Asian with hosts Hosts Youngmi Mayer and Brian Park, a show "where two Asians talk about their feelings."  In particular, this episode featuring Rachel Nguyen (@thatschic on Instagram, if you're familiar) about growing up on the internet pre-Instagram is worth a listen. Thanks, Mary K. for sending!

  5. Digging these dumpling! mini! candles! from Woon Kitchen. 🥟

  6. "Freezer care packages are wonderful. The best thing my friend did for me before my baby arrived was make cookie dough balls, then freeze them. We could bake 2 cookies in the toaster oven any time we needed a treat." —Sarah K., GNI reader re: last week's issue.

  7. Was struggling to pinpoint which interior design trend we're into right now, exactly, until we took Cristina Cleveland’s genius and alarmingly accurate interior style quiz.

  8. Promptly placing all the books from the Women's Prize for Fiction Longlist onto the ever-growing TBR pile. In particular: Ruth Ozeki's The Book of Form and Emptiness.

  9. Turning Red, a new film from Pixar and directed by Domee Shi, comes out today. Cannot wait.

  10. Shameless plug: Did you know GNI is on Bookshop? 📚 Help us support indie bookstores!

This week's Sponsor:

Meet the Retinol that won’t cause dryness, redness, or flaking.

In case you haven't heard, Retinol is a wonder ingredient that truly does a little bit of everything. It can improve pigmentation, help fade acne scars and dark spots, smooth fine lines, and even out skin tone—to name a few impressive benefits.

Even better, Beauty Pie's Super Retinol (+ Vitamin C) Night Renewal Moisturizer is encapsulated to protect it from degradation while increasing stability and improving delivery. That means it works once absorbed into the skin, so it doesn’t cause redness or irritation. Apply a pea-sized amount to your face every 3 days or more, depending on how well your skin tolerates Retinol. Soon, you'll be ✨ glowing. ✨ (Plus—did we mention it's just $18? A steal.)

Shop Beauty Pie for direct access to luxury skincare, makeup, haircare, bodycare, and more at up to 75% off typical retail prices. No retailer markups = a huge win for your wallet (and your skincare routine).

  2. Bembien by Yi-Mei Truxes. Handwoven pieces, perfect for warmer weather.
