Day 74 / 365

37YEARS ago today the worlds first Internet domain name, symbolics.com was registered.

RECC’E OF THE DAY

1500bnTONNES of carbon is estimated to be stored in just the worlds permafrost - more than twice the amount found in the atmosphere.

39bnTONNES of carbon is stored in the peatlands of Europe and Western Siberia and experts are warning the regions will no longer be cold or dry enough to sustain peat permafrost by 2040 meaning the region is currently at tipping point.

36bnTONNES of carbon is produced annually by humans.  200bn tonnes is stored in the Amazon rainforest, 1600bn tonnes in the Arctic and 38,000 gigatonnes in the earths oceans.

TRACKING: UKRAINE

548kCIVILIANS have now been evacuated by Ukraine forces since the invasion began - this number does not reflect refugees but simply those rescued from high risk areas due to threat to injury.

4kCIVILIANS were evacuated from front line cities yesterday alone via 7 humanitarian corridors; 3 further corridors did not operate successfully - 2.8m Ukrainians have now fled their homes in total.

900MISSILES have now been launched at Ukraine by Russian forces since the attacks began 20 days ago according to US defence officials.

9MILES outside the centre of Kyiv is where the large - once 40 mile long - convoy of Russian troops remains stalled.

30%OF GLOBAL WHEAT and over half the global supply of sunflower oil comes from Russia and Ukraine and the worlds poorest economies are being hugely impacted.

4thSET of sanctions have been approved by the European Union as announced by France who hold EU presidency. They will target individuals, entities and the Russian economy.

14,911PEOPLE have now been arrested for anti-war protests in total across Russia.

400mPEOPLE around the world rely on food harvested in Ukraine and 125m people fed as part of the UN’s world food programme - half the overall demand - were fed by Ukraine. The invasion will now affect the availability and cost of food worldwide.

10%CONTRACTION of Ukraine’s economy and public debt rising from 50% to 60% are the expectations of 2022. It’s economic output is expected to shrink by 25-35%.

$1.4bnEMERGENCY funding by the IMF has been approved which will go towards a $4.8bn financing gap in Ukraine.

NEED-TO-KNOW

13%OF ADULTS in the world are obese and 39% are classified overweight. Now scientists have discovered an immune process to regulate inflammation in human fat that could help or event prevent it. By modifying immune “checkpoint proteins” researchers believe they can reduce the risks of both obesity and diabetes.

855SPECIES are now at risk of extinction due to an urban expansion of 590k square miles in the next 30 years as the global population in these areas will increase by 2.5bn.

11MILES per second (18.5km/h) was the speed of a 10ft asteroid which struck earth off the coast of Iceland just 2 hours after it was first discovered; luckily on this occasion the object was too small to cause significant harm. The impact only days ago is a reminder of how ill-prepared and ill-equipped earths defences actually are.

SHOULD-KNOW

545ANCIENT hand paintings have been analysed by archaeologists who found that children and babies could be responsible for up to 25% of all prehistoric art. In fact 6 paintings belonged to babies aged just 2 to 36 months old. The findings now suggest the activity was family orientated not simply individual work.

3INCH wingspans, Queens 2 inches long and a neurotoxin 7 times stronger than a honey bee that can cause seizures and cardiac arrest - the ‘Murder Hornet’ popular in Asia and now America can decimate honeybee habitats, bee populations in general and threaten millions of dollars worth of crops. Now scientists have discovered a secreted chemical called ‘pheromone’ which can be used to track, bait and trap the insect to mange the threat.

80mPEOPLE - more than the population of the UK or France - use TikTok in the U.S, now the Chinese based company is rushing to move all US data over to America in order to head off privacy concerns by DC regulators over spying. ByteDance is working with Oracle to archive this in a move that will also see an end to US employees reporting to Beijing managers.

GOOD-TO-KNOW

15DIFFERENT pathogens which either have the potential to cause a future pandemic or are among the worlds worst diseases will now be targeted by Moderna who are aiming to develop 15 mRNA vaccines - a type which can be modified and edited without the need to develop or manufacture an entirely new formula - by 2025.

100mDEGREES Celsius - 180,000,032 degrees Fahrenheit - is a new world record for plasma temperature achieved by a UK based firm Tokamak Energy using its a new nuclear fusion device which experts are arguing - due to its smaller size and quick development at a lower cost - is edging us closer to commercially viable nuclear fusion.

1stRULING of its kind for self-driving cars in the U.S as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states future autonomous cars will not require manual controls. This means that when fully autonomous cars do appear on the road they will likely not have a steering wheel or pedals for manual override.
