Spring is my favorite season, and maybe with a May birthday, I’m biased, but I also love the feeling of rebirth and the return of more greenery!

Every year I’m excited about the increased energy I get as the sun gets higher in the sky, but I’ve also historically found it quite exhausting and anxiety-inducing.

As a gigging musician and accompanist, I have often felt like April and May are times when I don’t have time to come up for air, with increased amounts of work and social activities, and so I used to struggle to enjoy my favorite season!

Coming out of the hibernation feeling of winter can pose challenges and adjustments.

If you have a hard time adjusting to the changing seasons, it's probably because transitions are hard and take a lot of energy to process, even long-awaited, positive ones.

If you feel unsettled, anxious, or just have a lot of complex feelings around this time of year, there's nothing wrong with you.

I've heard others say that spring is a tough mental health time of year for them, too, but most people are more in the “YAY SPRING” camp, so it doesn’t get talked about as much.

I used to forget this every year, but when I mentally prepare for my increased anxiety and restlessness, it’s much easier to handle the extra stimuli and energy.

This means that the transition to a new season might require a shift in our self care practices.

When you plan ahead for a seasonal shift, you'll have ideas ready to fit different situations and emotional states, and you don’t have to think too hard about it. (I don’t know about you, but my brainpower has definitely felt diminished lately, with everything happening in the world. 😵)
