Recently, I ran a survey where I asked thousands of freelancers and agency owners:

Reader, what do you think the #1 answer was?

Before I share with you what this revealing top answer was, there's something even more interesting...

It's what the answer reveals about you and your freelance and agency business.

Yet ALMOST NOBODY actually does it.

And often, this can become our BUSINESS' BIGGEST WEAKNESS.

And while I agree doing these things would help you land more clients... let's also be real.

Why is it not happening?

There's something missing in the equation.

What if you could commit to finding that missing piece and changing it today? Would you?

If so, I'd like to share a few things that might help.

At Folyo, we've generated over $2 million in revenue via a rapid-results client outreach and lead acquisition system.

Now this sounds like a big operation (and the results are big) BUT for most of that time, it's just been me running the system.

"And how does one guy find and source enough leads to generate that kind of revenue?"

Let's dive right into that.

First, there are 2 main questions that come up right about now when I bring up outbound sales:

1. "Should I even be doing outbound sales instead of focusing exclusively on my inbound pipeline?"
2. "Are job sites, RFP sites, and other places really worth it? If so, what is the best website, RFP site, or job board to find client work?"

Let’s answer #1 first.

The answer is YES!

Leads on job boards and RFP sites get a bad wrap from a lot of freelancers and agencies, and rightfully so.

But the truth is job boards, RFPs, LinkedIn etc. doesn't need to be... well, horrible.

Especially if you have a system for finding these projects, like:

[sourcing] → [qualifying/vetting] → [first contact] → [closing the deal]

Or if you took our training program, here's what it could look like:

With a simple system like this, outbound isn't about wasting time on leads who later turn out to be cheapskate clients.

It is simply a numbers game.

A numbers game with a guaranteed output assuming you hit your numbers.

And that’s exactly why supplementing your regular pipeline makes a ton of sense.

Yes - if you try wading through job boards without a system you will get fed up by tedious and soul crushing "build me a twitter clone. budget: $100" projects.

This is true…

IF YOU TRY TO SOURCE, COURT, AND CLOSE LEADS YOURSELF, ONE-BY-ONE.

This is the wrong approach.

(You wouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight, after all.)

So don't try to bring willpower to systems-fight.

Check this out: based on our survey, the average freelancer / agency needs about 30 leads per month to sell one $10,000+ project.

That means finding 1 qualified lead per day

+

applying a coherent and repeatable system for selling to these projects

=

you walk away with $10,000+ in sold projects for that month. (Assuming you can do the work.)

More proposals sent and sales calls booked = more money in your bank account.

And while it’s true that inbound leads might be better, there is one very superior quality to outbound leads:

They are 100% in your control.

With inbound, you can't control how many leads come in. And it can take months to build and yield results. You might not have that time.

But with outbound you control the volume, the criteria, and even the close rate. 🤯

Therefore I believe a healthy mix of inbound and outbound leads is ideal.

Which brings us to question #2:

"What’s the best website to find these 30 leads a month?"

Okay, the truth is no matter how much you want there to be some mythical end-all-be-all place where great clients post projects…

it doesn’t exist.

Great projects are posted everywhere: job boards, RFP sites, LinkedIn networks, Slack communities, and, increasingly, individual organization websites.

But who has time to monitor -- um -- the Internet like that?

And where do you even start?

Over the last 7 years, I've personally unearthed 11,574 of these high-quality web design contract opportunities online.

Here’s what a typical lead list looks like:

Almost every single one of the 11,000+ projects I’ve found was worth $10,000+ in work. All of them were from companies and organizations I'd be proud to work with.

The system is always running and outputting new projects.

Now a quick note: While I stick to web design and have strict criteria for things like: budget ($100/hour min.) and project type, there’s nothing stopping you from tuning this very same system to your skillset and budget range –

It can even output more (or less) opportunities based on what you need.

It doesn't matter if you're a freelance writer, a graphic designer, or a Laravel developer. The system will help output the right stuff for you because you're the one telling it what to do.

Since you get to decide what your system looks like you can make sure it's exactly the work you love to do (and have in your portfolio).
