Electric phrasing and phasing shift as trembling synths and a climbing bass crash over the opening verse. “Lay Back in the Sun” is the feel-good hit of summer. Hymnal rock and roll at its most atmospheric. Recorded over and over at Moles Studio in Bath between 1993 and 1994 with a core trio of rock and roll wastrel and mastermind Jason Pierce on guitar and vocals, Kate Radley on keyboards and backing vocals, Sean Cook on bass and harmonica. Chris Sharrack rolled the drums. Released on the album “Pure Phase” on 28 March 28, 1995. Initial CD copies were sold in a glow-in-the-dark, encapsulated CD case. Wave after wave of ethereal, bittersweet chords lift the song ever higher. Hey honey, y'know. Lay back in the sun. Gonna have me some good times. Good dope, good fun.
