For my redistricting recaps, I’m slowly building an outlook of the upcoming 2022 U.S. House races. Each state will include a link to its respective post as well as a headline count of how many incumbents or open seats the state adds to the chart below. Once I’ve covered all 50 states’ new maps, we’ll have a full House seating chart that displays each party’s outlook in the midterm elections, tallying the number of incumbents as well as both open and competitive seats.

Minnesota: +4 Dem incumbents, +4 GOP incumbents*

• A five-member panel of judges opted for a map that largely retains most of the old district boundaries and doesn’t produce any significant partisan shifts. *The death of Rep. Jim Hagedorn triggered a special election for MN-1 this summer. This election is expected to produce a GOP incumbent for the 2022 midterms.

Tennessee: +1 Dem inc., +7 GOP incumbents, 1 Open Seat

• Republicans held complete control in Tennessee’s redistricting process and effectively drew Democrats out of a seat in Nashville as none of the new districts hold the city in its entirety.

Washington: +7 Dem incumbents, +3 GOP incumbents

• Washington’s independent redistricting commission drew the state’s new districts and has been praised for its outreach to local tribes of indigenous peoples to ensure equal representation at the ballot box.
