MARKET OVERVIEW & UPCOMING CATALYSTS: Yesterday looked like a massive short squeeze to me. Nevertheless yesterdays retail sales numbers came in at +0.9% when the consensus was 0.7%. Think these numbers were good? Guess again. The more retail sales remain resilient the more inflation will bite. Somethings got to give for inflation this high to come down. Today we have Housing Starts & Building Permits 0830ET (Consensus 1.783m/1.813m respectively). This will be followed tomorrow by Existing Home Sales (Consensus 5.65m) on Thursday & New home sales on Monday (Consensus 0.758m). We already have some crazy news out this morning on mortgage applications. The weekly mortgage demand from homebuyers tumbled 12% due to the high interest rates. And gas prices? … yeah … another record high yesterday.

WALMART & TARGET: Both underperformed on earnings. It’s a solid sign that inflation is cutting into consumers. Walmart’s observations were the most useful. They said they saw an increase in sales of lunchmeat & half gallons of milk. Need I explain further? Inflation is such that consumers are looking for ways to save on lunch & folks are buying less of their necessities … like milk. I can’t think of a time when I bought anything less than a gallon of milk … even when I was just feeding myself. Indicators such as these are much more useful than government statistics!

UK INFLATION: UK inflation came in at the 40 year high of 9%. This quote just about sums it up: “A quarter of Britons have resorted to skipping meals as inflationary pressures and a food crisis conflate in what Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey recently dubbed an “apocalyptic” outlook for consumers.”
