Amazon doubled down on logistics during the pandemic. However, the ecommerce giant is scaling back on its expansion this year, taking in fewer delivery partners.

Too big too fast?

Amazon Top Terms

Here are the top 10 terms on Amazon that will give you an edge in the industry. This data was taken from Amazon between May 1st to May 14th.

The US is running out of baby formula. That’s why “infant formula powder” is taking our #2 spot in this week’s top movers. Amazon Shareholder Sues Bezos, Jassy, and 17 Others

There’s been a lot of talk about Amazon’s alleged misuse of sellers’ data that even the SEC is getting involved. This time, the limelight is shifted to its alleged misuse of user data through biometrics.

Stephen Nelson, an Amazon shareholder, filed a lawsuit against the top executives of the company, including founder Jeff Bezos and CEO Andy Jassy. Nelson alleges that the leaders know Amazon has violated state laws regarding the use of biometrics data such as voice and fingerprint, and facial recognition.

The company uses biometrics for a lot of its technology, including Alexa, Amazon Go, and AWS. The alleged collection and misuse of data can potentially harm the company, which is the main reason behind the shareholder’s lawsuit.

Some customers aren’t concerned because data collection of this type is common nowadays. But Amazon does store some very interesting consumer data in their system, including those related to ecommerce.

To address the concern, shareholders will meet on May 25 to look into Rekognition, Amazon’s facial recognition service launched in 2016. They’re going to study how the technology can violate privacy and civil rights and whether it targets minorities.

A TikTok-Like Instagram

TikTok spews out trends that affect the ecommerce industry. (Remember the Amazon leggings?)

TikTok is a great place to get user-generated content, and various Amazon products are featured on the site, which potentially leads to more sales. Other social media platforms are taking notes from the popular app. Its influence shows up in Youtube Shorts and Instagram Reels. The latter is taking it to the next level by turning its feed full-screen, just like TikTok.

We have yet to see how the new interface will affect Instagram and how it attracts customers. Currently, Instagram and TikTok have roughly the same number of active monthly users—1 billion. Both platforms can be used by ecommerce business owners effectively for product promotion, including working with influencers.

Amazon discrimination. New York’s Division of Human Rights filed a complaint against Amazon for allegedly discriminating against pregnant and disabled workers.

Extended referral fee reduction. Two years ago, Amazon reduced the FBA referral fee for apparel for European sellers. The promotion is extended to March 2023.
