New Old Age - Shame
It was a hearing on Capitol Hill to investigate the deadly insurrection. One police officer described how rioters attempted to gouge out his eye and called him a traitor as they sought to invade the Capitol. Another told of being smashed in a doorway and nearly crushed to death amid a battle with a pro-Trump mob. A third recalled how he was beaten unconscious and stunned repeatedly with a Taser as he pleaded with his assailants. A fourth relayed how he was called a nigger over and over again by intruders wearing “Make America Great Again” merch. All the assailants - all of them - were screaming that Trump had sent them. These officers put their lives on the line to protect democracy. How did the Republicans thank them? They boycotted the inquiry altogether. Not one Republican admitted to watching that hearing as if it wasn’t worth their time. Ted Cruz was playing basketball. Overturning election results, white supremacy and racism are now major platforms of one of our two political parties. It’s not just terrible for the Republican party. It’s terrible for all of us. Lincoln is weeping in shame. Reference “January 6 Committee with Capitol and D.C. Police” C-SPAN (2021) If you liked this post from New Old Age, why not share it? |
