One of the reasons why many don’t like SEO is that it’s difficult to find a correlation between actions and results.

Yes, we all know that quality content, backlinks, good on-page optimization and a fast website, to name a few things, help improve your SEO, but which one of those is actually moving the needle?

Here’s the answer… all of them!

With SEO you can’t just focus on one thing. You can create awesome content, but if your website sucks and provide a terrible user experience, it won’t help your SEO. If you have a blazing fast and optimized website, but you’re publishing bad quality content, your website won’t rank.

SEO is like a well-oiled machine that is made up of many working pieces. Some big, some small, but they are all important. And if one breaks, your SEO machine will stop working.

Instead of stressing over what you should focus on more, get in the mindset that you need to focus on all aspects of your SEO strategy.

That’s why it’s called a strategy. You need to plan, schedule, execute and monitor specific actions to make it work.

How to know if your SEO is working?

If you are putting in the work, you will see the results. You may not be able to know exactly which actions are getting you there, so just focus on the results.

Here is how you know if your SEO is working:

1. Your search engine rankings are improving

Of course, to know this you need to be tracking your rankings in the first place. Remember that everything starts with your keyword research.

Once you know which are your best keywords, you can start creating content based on those and you can start tracking your rankings.

2. Your organic traffic is increasing

When your keyword rankings start going up, inevitably your organic traffic will increase because more people will find your website in search results. So make sure you are tracking your website traffic with an analytics solution.

3. You will start getting more organic conversions

Whatever a conversion means to you, be it a sale, trial signup, or newsletter subscriber, you will start getting more thanks to the increased traffic that came as a result of your increased rankings.

Of course, this is assuming you are providing a good user experience and publishing good content with strong call-to-actions that promote conversions.

4. You will start getting more backlinks

If you are creating quality content that is ranking on search engines, more people will be able to find it and some of those will link back to you.

When you are getting started, acquiring backlinks may require that you take a hands-on approach and look for creative backlink opportunities, and also by promoting your content through different channels like social media.

5. New content will get indexed and start ranking faster

SEO compounds over time, so everything you do right now will create a snowball effect and your website will become stronger each day.

When that happens, search engines will start crawling your website more often and for longer periods of time, which will improve your indexing speed.

In other words, new content will start ranking much faster.

As I said before, you may not be able to pinpoint exactly what’s moving your SEO needle, but if you are consistent with your SEO strategy, you will start seeing the results.
