New Old Age - Memorial Day
Maybe this Memorial Day should honor the innocent victims of mass shootings. Like the innocent children and teachers killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Slain by a teenage gunman and laws that let him buy weapons of annihilation as easily as buying a soda. Slaughtered by inaction against gun control by 50 Republican senators and Texan Republicans who think nothing of sacrificing schoolchildren for their cause. This inaction was writ large by various police forces who failed their own training and waited around as the gunman continued to shoot and kill these children. Who didn’t save these children because they were more interested in saving themselves. Who called for backup and extra protection from other law enforcement as the tiny bodies of dead children accumulated in classrooms 111 and 112. Students trapped in the interconnected classrooms with the gunman called 911 throughout the ordeal. Here’s the log of those 911 calls. At 12:03, child identified herself and whispered she’s in classroom 112. At 12:10, child called back, in classroom 112, advised there are multiple dead. At 12:13, child called again on the phone. At 12:16, child called back and said there was eight to nine schoolchildren alive. At 12:19, child in classroom 111 called, she hung up when another child told her to hang up. At 12:21, three shots were fired, they can be heard over the 911 call. At 12:36, child called back and was told to stay on the line and be very quiet, child told 911 that he shot the door. At 12:43, child asked 911 to please send the police now. At 12:47, child again asked 911 to please send the police now. At 12:46, 911 said they could not, child said she could hear the police next door. At 12:50, shots are fired, they can be heard over the 911 call. At 12:51, it’s very loud, and sounds like officers are moving children out of the classrooms. The events in Uvalde have shattered the fantasy that a good guy with a good gun will prevent bad gun violence. Spare a moment for the fallen. For those that gave their lives.
