Joaquin Lopez performing on stage

“It hit me that healing really is creative work.”

Musician, counselor, and Creative Laureate for the City of Portland Joaquin Lopez invites us to listen with our poetic brain and reflect with our heart. Lopez’s soulful talk for CreativeMornings/Portland tells the story of his life growing up “neither here nor there” as gay and Mexican American and serenades us in Spanish and English. His early painful experiences led him to pour himself into music, into community art, and into connecting with others. Watch Joaquin Lopez’s performance and see how by reconciling our different aspects — the stories of our community elders with the parts of ourselves we’ve been taught to hide — we can usher in a personal folklore that makes us whole.
