European tech-watchers have long criticised the failure of the continent's universities to produce the kind of rip-roaring success that the US has seen.

A new survey of spinout founders has only confirmed those fears, and it's left some of the most-respected universities in Europe looking bruised. 

So how do we fix it?

It's one thing to conquer your home market; but quite another to touch down in a new country and replicate your success in a totally different place.

For French corporate food startup Foodles, opening an office in London meant it had to acclimatise to a new culture, a new setting — and a new bureaucracy.

The firm's first fund hit a couple of goldmines, including four unicorns — three in Estonia and one in Colombia.

♻️ Epoch Biodesign raises $11m for plastic-eating enzymes. The British deeptech startup's two cofounders are worlds apart — one's a climate activist who's just left school; the other a 40-year veteran of systems biology research — but they hope their discoveries can help save this planet. Their tools let them programme enzymes to dissolve plastics, in the hope of tackling the global waste crisis.
