TODAYS OBSERVATIONS: Inflation is coming in hot & the Fed is due out for another rate hike this Wednesday. The question in the minds of traders & investors is what kind of hike are we looking at; a 50bps hike or a 75bps hike? If the hike comes in at 50bps the market could dump on the assumption that Powell isn’t taking inflation seriously. If the hike comes in at 75bps or higher the market could dump on the assessment that such a dramatic hike would be bad for markets. Then again, Wednesday could come & go … & the market could pump simply because the bad news is behind us (shorts taking profit). Regardless, Powell will hold a press conference after & may say something to the tune of how he misjudged inflation. Sure, he’ll attempt to speak in a manner that minimizes fear, but the markets will scrutinize the smallest change from his last press conference all the same.

Prior to all of this, however, we have the Producer Price Index (The Producer version of the CPI) amid record energy costs. PPI MoM for May is expected to come in at 0.8%. Core PPI is expected to come in at 8.6% YoY. These metrics are already high, though any higher than expected & we’re looking at some serious trouble.

Inflation is always tough to contain, however do not make the mistake of thinking that we are so disconnected from the world that raising rates in the United States is enough. We import goods from China, Europe, Latin America, & other places around the world. So as long as we remain dependent of foreign goods & services, their inflation is our inflation. Therefore to contain inflation, we not only need to reduce demand here in the United States, but other countries will need to reduce their demand as well. Both European & Asian Markets are diving right now. Not a good omen for the day to come.

Another Day Another Record: Gas Prices are now $5.014 gal. This is an economic killer! & when the strategic petroleum reserves run dry after the November Elections (Funny how that works out), you can bet that prices will likely remain high. Heating costs (for those who heat & cook with natural gas) alone will likely hit records this Winter. In the mean time diesel is driving the cost of shipping & operating heavy equipment. Farmers in particular are hard hit. The price of diesel right now is $5.77 a gallon. Just to give you an idea of how high gas prices are, I can fill my riding lawnmower for the same price I used to fill my car two years ago. Remember that for every penny
