TODAYS OBSERVATIONS: Given the market rally on Monday combined with the monumental news we have inbound it is no surprise that the futures are red. Europe & Asia were red as well (Asia more mixed than red). Australia, perhaps looking at examples set by central banks across the globe, raised rates higher than expected. REMEMBER …. INFLATION DATA ON FRIDAY (8.3% YoY Expected)! For today we have the balance of trade.

The National AVG gallon of gas is now $4.919 … that’s $0.081 away from $5.00 gasoline. Ladies & Gents, … THATS MASSIVE! In short, if you have a small 12 gallon tank, & you fill up once a week, you would be paying $60 a week on commuting. When President Biden took office, gas was $2.39 gal … a difference of $2.529 from where it stands today … meaning people who are paying todays price ($4.919) are paying $30.348 more per week or $1578.10 a year. As for myself, I fill up 2.5 times per week … so I’m paying $3,945.24 extra a year assuming prices stay the same. That’s $3,945.24 that I’m neither saving nor paying into the economy per year, that I wasn’t paying before. Indeed, the increased cost of gas is an actual car payment for me ($328.77 mo). When we take into account the price of shipping, natural gas, heating, cooking, petroleum based products, etc … we realize that working families are paying roughly $5,000-$7,500 more a year (or $416.66-$625 a month), discounting other drivers of inflation. The avg family household makes $7,583.33 a month (& this average includes wealthy family households). Moreover, as inflation bites further, taxes bite further. You may have received a pay raise (which is more taxable income), but inflation is likely higher, & the more you pay for goods/services the more you pay in taxes as a result. The sales tax on a item that costs $1.25 is more than an item that cost just $1.00 a year ago. THIS AFFECTS PEOPLES BEHAVIOR!

Every uptick in the costs of NEEDS corresponds with a decrease in the demand for WANTS. How does this affect consumer discretionary stocks? It destroys them! Combine this with an increase in Fed rates, offloading the Feds balance sheet, other drivers of inflation, & record tax revenue, where does this lead? It leads to an eventual recession, whereas people aren’t buying as much, retailers aren’t selling as much, & they’ll make up the margins by firing workers or automation, … which leads to less people paying their bills.

Pay attention to savings data, credit data, retail sales, incomes, unemployment, margins, inventories, GDP, consumer sentiment, home sales, etc… & please … save your money & only invest in reliably profitable companies that you believe can remain profitable amid a recession with a little bit of pricing power & a solid economic moat. Though it may just be easier to go short. I don’t think anyone believes the worst is behind us .. but remember that the elites you see in the media don’t feel the pricing pinch the average American does! They have no clue how bad things truly are for you & your family. So take their assessments with a massive grain of salt!
