TODAYS OBSERVATIONS: Today we have the Producer Price Index (The PPI is the Producer version of the CPI) amid record energy costs. PPI MoM (Month over Month) for May is expected to come in at 0.8%. That’s up at a higher rate than the previous month which came in at 0.5%. The overall YoY PPI is expected to come in at a whopping 10.9% which is actually down from the 11% the month prior. In short folks, as it pertains to producers, we are already in double digit inflation. Core PPI is expected to come in at 8.6% YoY (Year over Year), down from the YoY numbers the previous month which came in at 8.8%. These metrics are already high, though any higher than expected & we’re looking at some serious trouble. I think the numbers will disappoint, but do NOT make the assumption that the market will dump lower given yesterdays sell off as it may be priced in. It MAY be priced in … “MAY.” It’s always hard to assess a play, no matter how bearish or bullish, after the market tanks significantly the day prior. Note that yesterdays dump (& last Fridays), was simply pricing in the uncertainty of the PPI & Fed rate hikes this week. A solid rule of thumb, as we have seen time & time again, … is if the street is expecting bad news the following week coming off a market rally, the market usually prices in the news 3-5 days prior. So where do I expect the markets to move in the next three days? Well yesterday the market closed down low with very little bounce. This is usually indicative of the shorts holding … not covering. Should the PPI come in less than expected, they may cover. Should the Fed announce a .75bps hike, they may cover (That’s what the street wants). Perhaps they will cover for no other purpose than the bad news is behind us after the Fed interest rate decision. However if the Fed decides on .25 or .50bps … the market will not be pleased in my opinion. The street will look at this as if the Fed isn’t serious about inflation. However the Fed is also offloading their balance sheet (actively sucking money out of the economy) which makes them hesitant to raise rates too high too quickly. Remember that Powell said a .75bps hike is NOT something they’re considering. This is the most reactive … not proactive … Fed in my lifetime … which is saying a lot given the Yellen years. Stock Futures are up, there is massive uncertainty surrounding crypto, European Markets down & confused, & Asian Markets closed mixed (depending on the market). Remember, this upcoming earnings season will fully price in the China lockdowns & the war in Ukraine. Not to mention record gas/diesel prices. BUY LIST UPDATE: It’s always tough after a market dump to add either long or short plays. Be patient folks. All of the suggested short plays I posted earlier worked marvelously! But I’m hesitant to add more given the market lows. It seems to me that shorts are holding & when they cover the markets will rally.
