This week’s money mood: Now what? 🥴️️

If you’re dialed in to news coverage about the economy and stock market, the past week or so has been a whirlwind. The inflation report came back higher than expected (again). Crypto investors had a terrible weekend. Stocks closed in a bear market on Monday as investors fretted about what inflation would lead the Fed to do about interest rates this week. We got that answer yesterday — another rate increase, as was widely expected.

We may not know what the economy will do next, but one thing you can count on from us: all the must-know info you need to navigate what comes.

In the meantime, we’d love to hear what topics you’d like us to cover here in the future. Send me an email at dbrown@ellevest.com

Here for you,

The Fed strikes again

As expected, yesterday the Federal Reserve announced that it is upping interest rates again, this time by 0.75%. Here’s a quick explainer — what changed, plus what it means for you.

Inflation cometh (and cometh, and cometh)

But we’ve got you — here’s a recap of what’s been happening with inflation recently, what’s driving it, and what you might do because of it.

$$ win of the week

“My partner and I recently bought a house, and we saved majorly on our mortgage by comparison-shopping rates. We ended up with a zero-point loan a full quarter–percentage point lower than the going rate at the time. Our monthly payments will be hundreds of dollars lower, and we’ll save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan, all because I took the time to call a few extra banks and negotiate.”

A roller coaster of emotions (via links)

Women, especially younger women, seem to be way more confident about money than they were in 2020. And we are here. for. it.

Putting women on money isn’t going to fix systemic issues, but it’s still exciting to see. Next up: Wilma Mankiller on the quarter.

File under “yesssss”: These heirs to massive ill-gotten fortunes are divesting from their inheritances.

Rising interest rates in action: Earlier this year, 30-year mortgage rates averaged around 3%. Now? Try nearly 6%, the highest since 2008. (Need homebuying advice? We’ve got you.)

Let’s leave things on a high note: In the RTO debate, employees who have come to prefer working remotely seem to be winning the battle with their employers. Hell yeah.
