The GIST - Over the all-white dress code
Long time, no see!
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend as much as the world’s top-ranked female eater Miki Sudo did. After missing last year’s Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest because she was pregnant, the new mom scarfed down 40 dogs in 10 minutes on Monday to win this year's contest. From an actual baby to a food baby, this mom’s No. 1.

Quote of the Day
Something needs to change. Something needs to be done. Something needs to happen because there’s way too many people losing their lives.
— Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks, following the tragic yet all too familiar shooting during a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois on Monday. Heartbreaking.
🎾 Wimbledon: Eyes on the prize
The GIST: Wimbledon’s all-white dress code is being called out again — this time with female athletes sharing the anxiety of being on their period while playing on one of tennis’ grandest stages. And as that overdue conversation happens off-court, on-court, the fight to advance to the semis rages on.
Women’s singles: The gals kept us entertained over the weekend (as they do) as huge upsets shook up the tournament. Most notably, world No. 1 Iga Świątek’s 37-match winning streak ended on Saturday, her first loss in roughly four months.
- And after world No. 25 Amanda Anisimova knocked out fellow American No. 12 Coco Gauff this weekend, the last American standing will face No. 18 Simona Halep at 8:30 a.m. ET for a spot in the semis.
- The other semifinal will feature world No. 2 Ons Jabeur — who is the first Arab or North African–born athlete to reach a Grand Slam semi — against 34-year-old Tatjana Maria, who will play in her first-ever semi just 15 months after giving birth to her second child. With stories like that, how can you root for just one?
Men’s singles: The men’s side, on the other hand, continues to play out as expected, as Novak Djokovic came back from a two-set deficit to win his 26th straight Wimbledon match yesterday and earn a spot in Friday’s semifinal against world No. 12 Grand Slam–semifinal rookie Cameron Norrie.
- As for a spot in the other semi, American Taylor Fritz faces the infamous Rafael Nadal while Cristian Garín attempts to stave off Nick Kyrgios — who’s facing assault allegations back in Australia.
⚽️🏀🏒 Quick hits
⚽ USWNT: As expected, the USWNT opened the CONCACAF W Championship (a qualifier for the Olympics and FIFA World Cup) with a 3–0 win over Haiti in group play on Monday. Next up? Jamaica at 7 p.m. ET tomorrow. Ready for another dub.
🏀 NBA: Kevin Durant — who’s currently under contract with the Brooklyn Nets for four more years — requested a trade last week, sending shockwaves through the league. Though nearly every team wants the former MVP, not many can actually afford him. That said, we don’t expect this trade (if the Nets can work one out at all) to happen any time soon.
🏒 NHL: Mike Grier was hired as general manager (GM) of the San Jose Sharks yesterday, becoming the first Black GM in NHL history. Grier — who played over 1,000 games in the NHL himself — has his work cut out for him if he wants to end the Sharks’ three-year playoff drought.
