A Guide to Writing Better for SEO

Let’s face it writing for SEO can often feel like we’re sacrificing the quality of our content on the alter of keyword rankings…

- Robotic voice
- Repetitive keyword mentions
- Content that feels watered down and low value

However, In 2022 blogs are still an incredibly important way to generate demand for our products. So how do we create meaningful content that also helps us climb the rankings on Google?

Here are a few steps to create excellent optimized content —

✅ Do Your Research

This may seem obvious but I can’t tell you how many companies I’ve consulted with that totally miss this important step. Here’s a framework I use when creating a SEO content roadmap -

• Use a tool like SEMRush, Ahrefs, or Ubersuggest to identify as many keywords related to your category as possible. We’ll narrow down in the next step.
• Organize and sort the keywords by difficulty and search volume. Next, highlight the ones closest to direct intent. These are your top targets → Low difficulty, high volume, high intent.
• Actually go to Google and search these keywords… Document the top 3 organic listings. Are they listicles, guides, videos, local business listings? Use this info as inspiration for your content.
  
  
  

✅ Create an Outline and Write

Remember in grade school when we had to create outlines before we wrote the essay? Turns out this is super helpful with SEO.

Use the outline to define the objective, keyword target, content ideas, and structure. Look for ways you can add more value and make your content stand out from the competition.

Do you have better data, updated information, deeper domain knowledge? Use this to your advantage.

✅ Include the Necessary SEO Elements

Optimize your content by ensuring it has the following:

- Title Tag
- Meta Description
- Open graph tag
- URL Slug
- Page/Post Categorization (H1, H2, H3, Etc)
- Image Alt Text

It’s also a good idea to include relevant internal site links in your content. This will help Google navigate to the new page. You can use a tool like Badger to analyze your content and generate automated dashboards to share with your leadership or clients that you work with.
