My first 5 hires at Adobe Sign / EchoSign, beyond the core founding+ team, once we had paying customers and first, if early, product-marketing fit:

#1:  Full-time sales rep at $8k-ish MRR.  I Should have hired two.  Should have hired him even early.  Hired once we were closing > 1 new, non self-service customer a week.

#2.  A great, paid, full-time-ish intern.  A great one is a terrific force multiplier.

In the earliest days, your #1 fear is business failure, going under.  Not building something anyone will buy.  Running out of money.  This fear, though, is highly actionable.  You scramble, you hustle, you find a way … or you don’t, and blink out of existence.  Another start-up that came and went.

But after that, if you make it, post-Initial Traction … the longest stretch for me at least was Fear of Being Stuck in the Middle.

Model N was founded waaay back in 1999 (!) as a contract management solution for life sciences, and its built modules and more features on top of that, into a true revenue management solution for the industry. 

Today it’s valued at almost $1 Billion, at $200m in revenue growing … 11%.  A very long and slow burn to a billion dollar market cap. But one we can learn from.
