CB Insights - surprise: Coinbase Ventures

Over the last few months I’ve been on some podcasts talking about tech, CB Insights, etc.

No winter for Coinbase Ventures

Despite Coinbase’s brutal 2022, its venture arm was still the #1 most active corporate VC investor (tied with GV) in the second quarter.

Coinbase Ventures and GV (Google Ventures) invested in 28 companies each in Q2’22, pulling back from their first quarter dealmaking.

Overall, CVC activity fell by the largest margin in over a decade (though it remained one of the strongest quarters on record).

Japan bucked that trend. 

Corporate venture arms in the country dominated the world stage in Q2. Of the 9 most active CVCs, 5 are now based in Japan compared to 2 in Q1’22.

A government push to encourage more startup activity in the country may continue to drive a shift in dealmaking across all investor types, including CVCs.

Carbon meets its match
