Alex Jones ordered to pay Sandy Hook parents more than $4M.
Associated Press (Center) • Factual Grade 71% • 4 min read

A Texas jury ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay more than $4 million in compensatory damages to the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Sandy Hook massacre, marking the first time the Infowars host has been held financially liable for claiming the school shooting was a hoax. The parents testified about how they’ve endured a decade of trauma, [including] online threats, and harassment on the street.
    ...
The parents had sought at least $150 million for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Jones’ attorney asked the jury to limit damages to $8 and Jones himself said any award over $2 million “would sink us.” Free Speech Systems, which is Infowars’ parent company, filed for bankruptcy during the two-week trial.
    ...
Jones called the reduced award a major victory. “I admitted I was wrong. [...] I admitted that I followed disinformation but not on purpose. I apologized to the families. And the jury understood that.” he said. The jury must still decide how much he should pay in punitive damages.

Should states' abortion laws be left to referendums or legislators?

482 votes, 77 comments

Context: Kansas voters reject amendment on abortion law in the state.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Referendums - Let the people vote. Both political parties have stances that don’t align with polling. The vast majority of America believes there are merits to abortion but not unlimited abortion. Each state should have an open referendum (or multiple to varying degrees of abortion legislation) and the people can decide. This is an extremely nuanced, messy discussion, so letting our politicians who largely don’t represent the people is the best way forward

Unsure - First of all, the right to choose to have an abortion should never be left up to anyone other than the person who is pregnant and their medical provider. That said, I am leery of referenda for the mai...
