The greatest startup in the history of the world

I have a feeling it’s gonna be a great week.

IMO America is the greatest startup of all time: a bunch of disorganized, rag tag people teamed up to beat the biggest incumbent in the world. They disrupted the English by using tactics & strategies that were considered too off color. They cared more, and they had much more to lose.

And of course just like startups, most new countries fail.

But when they work - man do they work & get bigger than anyone possibly imagined.

Dead Eyes (podcast)

A linked a few months ago to an article about this podcast, I’m finally getting around to listening to it.

Basically, 20 years ago a guy got fired by Tom Hanks from HBO’s Band of Brothers for having “dead eyes”. He’s not bitter and isn’t trying to hold Tom to account or anything like that, it’s just a sort of exploration into why it might have happened.

I like it because it’s a decent behind the scenes of how show business works.

The last episode he manages to interview Tom Hanks - I’m not there yet.

The best career advice I’ve ever heard (article)

I first read this many years ago. It’s worked extremely well for me.

It’s so easy to meet interesting, smart, fun people when you have something to talk about yourself. All you need to do to have something to talk about is to make something. Anything, really. Just make something, all the way to completion. And then you have 1) a thing to talk about that you made, and 2) all the collective experience & learnings from the process of making the thing.
